Information & FAQ
The Fredricksen Stage Combat Intensive was founded in 2014 to provide more training opportunities and SAFD Skill's Proficiency Training hours to the Michigan theater and arts community. Participants can choose up two four different training trackings.
We offer 20 Skills Proficiecy Test hours in two weapons. For 2023, those weapons are Knife and Rapier & Dagger. If participants cannot decide between the two, we offer a third option where they can get a thorough sample of each with the 20 hours divided between both weapons.
In 2019, we began offereing a fourth training track to expand our capacity and broaden our options. We've have a few years of succesfully running the SAFD's Theatrical Firearm Safety course, last year was Wire Work, and this year we're thrilled to be bringing in Jess Finley to lead a Medieval Martial Arts intensive.

At the conclusion of each year's workshop, we gather on Sunday night at Christina's Farmhouse that her husband Tommy built for her and her family. If you can, please join us for food and drink, maybe some knife and axe throwing. We ask for a $10 per person for all you can eat food and non-alcholohic beverages, which is collected at the workshop. Please note, her farmhouse is over an hour's drive from Ann Arbor and the workshop site. Easy drive, but if you plan on consuming adult beverages, please plan on having a designated driver.
More details are provided at the workshop.
❓Do you really feed us? ❓
⚔️🍪 Yes. We have breakfast snacks so you can get your day started right. Think granola bars, fruit, bagels, that sort of thing. On Friday and Saturday we bring in lunch. Typically Jet's Pizza for some Detroit Style Pizza, and a local sandwhich place. And don't forget the BBQ on Sunday night at Christina's Farm. We will have both vegetarian and gluten free options as well. If you have other food allergies that will restrict you from having these lunch options, please plan accordingly. 🍪⚔️
❓Dinner? ❓
⚔️🍪 On your own for dinner, but there are a number of restaurants off of Plymouth Rd from fast food to counter service to sit down places and even a number of grocery stores. 🍪⚔️
❓Cookies?❓
⚔️🍪 Gonna have to register to find out. #swordsandcookies 🍪⚔️
❓Where can we stay?❓
⚔️🍪 There are a few hotel options off Plymoth Road near US-23. These are 5-10 minutes away from the Walgreen Drama Center. 🍪⚔️
❓Where can we park❓
⚔️🍪 Ah, parking. We ain't gonna lie, it ain't great, but it gets better as the workshop progresses. There is a lot right next the Walgreen Drama Center. This parking unfortunately is paid and on the Friday can fill up quickly. Saturday and Sundays is typically better. If this is full, there are other paid lots around north campus. Carpool, get their early, and hopefully we all find a space. 🍪⚔️
❓Can I bring my own weapons?❓
⚔️🍪 Yes. Please have them in a sword bag that covers the weapon you're bringing completely. Additionally, you must check in with the teacher of your track to have them inspect the personal weapon. If they decided it is good to use, then you may use it. You may leave it in the rooms during the day, but you should plan bringing it with you or stowing it in a car. 🍪⚔️
