Information & FAQ

The Fredricksen Intensive

The Fredricksen Stage Combat Intensive was founded in 2014 to provide more training opportunities and SAFD Skill's Proficiency Training hours to the Michigan theater and arts community. Participants can choose up two four different training trackings.

We offer 20 Skills Proficiecy Test hours in two weapons. For 2023, those weapons are Knife and Rapier & Dagger. If participants cannot decide between the two, we offer a third option where they can get a thorough sample of each with the 20 hours divided between both weapons.

In 2019, we began offereing a fourth training track to expand our capacity and broaden our options. We've have a few years of succesfully running the SAFD's Theatrical Firearm Safety course, last year was Wire Work, and this year we're thrilled to be bringing in Jess Finley to lead a Medieval Martial Arts intensive.

Closing Party on the Farm

At the conclusion of each year's workshop, we gather on Sunday night at Christina's Farmhouse that her husband Tommy built for her and her family. If you can, please join us for food and drink, maybe some knife and axe throwing. We ask for a $10 per person for all you can eat food and non-alcholohic beverages, which is collected at the workshop.  Please note, her farmhouse is over an hour's drive from Ann Arbor and the workshop site. Easy drive, but if you plan on consuming adult beverages, please plan on having a designated driver.

More details are provided at the workshop.

FAQ

Got Questions. We got answers.

Do you really feed us? ❓

⚔️🍪 Yes. We have breakfast snacks so you can get your day started right. Think granola bars, fruit, bagels, that sort of thing. On Friday and Saturday we bring in lunch. Typically Jet's Pizza for some Detroit Style Pizza, and a local sandwhich place. And don't forget the BBQ on Sunday night at Christina's Farm. We will have both vegetarian and gluten free options as well. If you have other food allergies that will restrict you from having these lunch options, please plan accordingly. 🍪⚔️

Dinner? ❓

⚔️🍪 On your own for dinner, but there are a number of restaurants off of Plymouth Rd from fast food to counter service to sit down places and even a number of grocery stores. 🍪⚔️

Cookies?❓

⚔️🍪 Gonna have to register to find out. #swordsandcookies 🍪⚔️

Where can we stay?❓

⚔️🍪 There are a few hotel options off Plymoth Road near US-23. These are 5-10 minutes away from the Walgreen Drama Center. 🍪⚔️

Where can we park❓

⚔️🍪 Ah, parking. We ain't gonna lie, it ain't great, but it gets better as the workshop progresses. There is a lot right next the Walgreen Drama Center. This parking unfortunately is paid and on the Friday can fill up quickly. Saturday and Sundays is typically better. If this is full, there are other paid lots around north campus. Carpool, get their early, and hopefully we all find a space. 🍪⚔️

Can I bring my own weapons?❓

⚔️🍪 Yes. Please have them in a sword bag that covers the weapon you're bringing completely. Additionally, you must check in with the teacher of your track to have them inspect the personal weapon. If they decided it is good to use, then you may use it. You may leave it in the rooms during the day, but you should plan bringing it with you or stowing it in a car. 🍪⚔️

Testing Track Specifics

New for 2024! We're excited to be offering this training option for you all.

❓How many SPTs and SPRs can I take? ❓

⚔️🍪 You can take up to 1 SPT and 2 SPRs OR up to 4 SPRs 🍪⚔️

❓How are the SPT weapons decided?❓

⚔️🍪 During registration you will have an opportunity to say which weapons you need the most. We will look at all the requests and determine which weapons we will be offering. 🍪⚔️

❓What does this cost?❓

⚔️🍪 Same tuition costs as the rest of the Fredricksen workshops. And you get the same benefits - this year’s t-shirt, lunch on Friday and Saturday, an opportunity to come to the barbecue. 🍪⚔️

❓What if I only need one SPT or one SPR? Can I come for just that?❓

⚔️🍪 No, to make this work best for everyone involved, we need you to be present for the whole weekend. If you aren’t testing, we will need you to partner with other members of the group. But hey, we all do this because we love to fight, right? 🍪⚔️

❓How are Partners selected? ❓

⚔️🍪 Sarah and Adam will put the participants into groups of four before the workshop. You will work within this group for your tests. As a group you will decided what you want to work on each class block. These groups will be based primarily on weapons need, but also possible familiarity between participants. 🍪⚔️

❓So, what does this look like?❓

⚔️🍪 Well, we’re going to find out. But the plan is that at the beginning of each morning Sarah and Adam will each take on a weapon to teach an SPT (this will also serve as the SPR for the selected weapon.) The group of four will decide which weapons they want to participate. They could all do one, or split up. Then in the afternoon Adam and Sarah will take on two different weapons to run SPRs, and again the group will have to make a choice. However, if you needed one the morning SPTs you will need to continue to work on that weapon. 🍪⚔️

❓Wait, why can’t I take 2 SPTs, one on Friday and one on Saturday?❓

⚔️🍪 Because we know the stress testing can put on people and we still want this to be a fun and enjoyable experience. 🍪⚔️

❓So, how does the testing work?❓

⚔️🍪 We’re recording EVERYTHING. Tests, Renewals, it’s all getting put on video. Once you feel you are ready, we shoot. Once we’ve got the fight in the can, you will have the option of testing live for Christina Traister during the evening class blocks. That way if you get to the end of the day and are completely shattered, we already have a good version that we can show to Christina. 🍪⚔️

❓Are the testing fees included in tuition?❓

⚔️🍪 No. Testing fees are separate because each participant will not need the same number of tests and/or renewals. Additionally, you may decide after working a fight that you are not ready to test. This way you are not losing any money should you test less than you expected. The workshop tuition goes towards your hours (lunches/t-shirt) and the opportunity to fight with some amazing partners. 🍪⚔️

❓So you’ve explained Friday and Saturday… what about Sunday?❓

⚔️🍪 Sunday is our catch-all/flex block. This is new to us. We will likely encounter some bumps and unseen difficulties that make get us off schedule. If we do, we have Sunday to make up anything we need. But when it all goes exactly according to plan, then Sunday will likely be an opportunity to add one additional SPR, or to redo a test. And when y’all are rockstars and rec all of the tests, well then Sunday becomes Fights Funday and we’ll have fun creating some choreography. I mean, we will have all the weapons. 🍪⚔️
